Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service
CAMHS is a multi-disciplinary team, offering a community based service throughout Dumfries & Galloway, to children, young people and their families/carers, who are experiencing emotional, behavioural and or/ mental health problems including psychiatric disorders.
CAMHS also offer early intervention to families as well as consultation, joint work and training to other services, via our Primary Mental Health Work team.
CAMHS also have a dedicated transition Mental Health Worker who works with older young people who may go on to require adult services when they reach 18. CAMHS also offer a Child and Adolescent Substance Service (ISSU18).
CAMHS offer a range of therapeutic interventions including:
- Information and advice
- Individual and family therapies
- Group work
- Psychiatric assessment
- Medication for certain conditions
As CAMHS is a specialist service, a referral by someone who knows the child, young person or family/carer and who may be able to offer some help in the first instance e.g. GP, Health Visitor, School Nurse is preferable but if required the young person and families/carers are able to contact the team themselves. To make or discuss a possible referral please see (contact us).
Your referrer, and or your GP, would routinely be kept informed of how you are getting on.
It can be helpful when services like CAMHS, social work and education share relevant information about you, and work together. However, we would only contact other agencies with your permission.
The only exception we have to maintaining confidentiality would be if we were concerned about someone’s safety, in this case we would be required to pass on information in order to protect that person.
