Endoscopy

About Us

Within NHS Dumfries and Galloway there are endoscopy units in two hospitals:

  • Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (Dumfries)
  • Galloway Community Hospital (Stranraer)

Patients have the option for a procedure at their nearest endoscopy unit. This does depend on the procedure required as the unit at the Galloway Community Hospital are unable to offer all procedures.

The Endoscopy department at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary consists of four endoscopy rooms. The department is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm and carries out both outpatient and inpatient procedures.

The Endoscopy department at Galloway Community Hospital does not run every day and depends on clinician availability.

Also called an Upper GI Endoscopy or OGD (Oesopho-Gastro-Duodenoscopy) is a procedure where an endoscope is used to look inside the oesophagus (gullet), stomach and the first part of the small intestine. It can be used to investigate any symptoms affecting your upper gastrointestinal tract.

This is a procedure that uses a thin, flexible colonoscope to investigate the lower part of the large bowel. Similar to a colonoscope, however the test will only go as far as the left side of your bowel.

This procedure allows the resection (removal) of large polyps (growths) and lateral spreading tumours. (Dumfries only)

Capsule Sponge trademarked as EndoSign  is a small capsule on a string. The capsule is a similar size to a vitamin tablet and is made from vegetarian gelatine. It contains a sponge which is designed to collect a sample of cells from your oesophagus (gullet). This will then be tested to find out if there are any cells which are unexpected or abnormal. Your doctor may refer you for this to investigate and manage your symptoms further details can be found on the leaflet below. (Currently Dumfries only)
