Neurology Services

The medical specialty of neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. Examples of some common neurological conditions are epilepsy, headache and migraines, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and many more. Some of these conditions are very common, others are quite rare, but in general they are conditions that are ‘lived with’ rather than being life threatening.

GPs provide all the treatment for some of the conditions e.g. some types of headache. For other conditions they refer people to the neurology team, which is based in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. The consultants will organise investigations, with the aim of making a diagnosis and then the person’s GP and the neurology team will work closely together to provide whatever treatment is required.
